Do you have that friend? You know the one I mean!
The friend that can do nooo wrong. She’s always helping people out. Everyone loves her (or so she claims). And she is constantly bragging about her praise. It can be something as simple as posting on Facebook that someone liked her outfit, or she may have to sit you down and show you the recent letter she received from her boss singing her praises.
When she does this every time you talk to her…it gets annoying!
Then there’s the friend who shares stories on Facebook. Sometimes she tells about her boys and how proud she is of them, and the story simply pulls at your heartstrings. Or the friend who shares about a lost necklace that she helped someone find that leaves you in tears when you’re done reading it.
What’s the difference?
To me – it’s all in the delivery!
The first person is bragging about everything she’s done. She is telling you about these “accomplishments” to brag and make herself feel better. She wants everyone and everyone to know that she is great, wonderful, hard-working, and worthy of attention and praise. (There may be an insecurity issue buried underneath there somewhere, but that is a whole ‘nother post for another day…)
The second person is sharing a story. They leave you feeling empowered, happy, or perhaps even sad – but you learn a lesson. You walk away with some great emotions from what the friend shared. And you may even be tempted to change your ways and go a difference direction with some aspect of your life.
Today I am asking you to please stop bragging! You don’t need to put a Facebook post every time something good happens to you. You don’t need to send copies of letters in the mail. Start a little brag board for yourself. Put those letters and kind words in a journal or another safe place where you can reference them when you’re feeling down.
On the other hand, if your story will help others better themselves – please share!
Bragging versus telling – there really is a difference.
No one likes a braggart, so please stop.
