Since staying home to raise our son, I haven’t gone back up to the school where I work very often. Part of the reason is because I’ve got enough to do each day to keep me more than busy, but another part of the reason is because it feels awkward.
Students and staff alike will tell me they miss me and want me back. While that’s nice and makes me feel appreciated, it feels a bit weird when they say it in front of the gal who replaced me.
Regardless, I did go up for a visit the other day to help the secondary principal make some changes to the school’s Facebook page.
When my little sidekick and I got to the school, we stopped at the secretary’s office and she started chatting with little Mr. J right away while I walked into the principal’s office. The principal and I caught up on what was new with each of us, discussed the best interview questions to ask prospective teaching candidates, and made a couple changes to the school’s Facebook page.
It was nothing major, and very typical of the conversations we would have had last year.
Then he asked me to close the door because he wanted to ask me something.
I got up to close the door, and – just as it was about to close – I heard crying.
“Oh my gosh – J is out here!” I thought to myself.
How had I just forgotten my son?!
I quickly grabbed him from the secretary, and then shut the door like I had originally intended to do so the conversation could continue.
The rest of the conversation is a blur. All I could think about was how I had forgotten about my son. I got back into “work” mode and mommy mode went away entirely, even though my son was just five feet away!
That moment solidified my choice to stay home. I’ve been thankful to have been home for nearly a year now, but that day I was even more thankful! I loved my career as an elementary teacher and administrator. It’s something I may go back to in the future.
But – for now – I’m more than happy staying home with my son.
On that day, I realized what my real job is – and I’m so thankful every day that I get to stay home with my little bundle of joy!
