The score was 57 to 30. It was late in the fourth quarter. It was pretty obvious to everyone in the gym who was going to win the game.
All of a sudden the gym went quiet.
“Did he just get a technical?” you could hear whispered from a wife to her husband.
The losing team’s star player hobbled out into the court to take the two free throw shots.
For a moment, everyone in the gym was baffled. What had just happened?
The coach hadn’t yelled at the ref or done anything obviously wrong, yet the technical was clearly directed right at him.
What was going on?
The girl who was going to take the shots? She had fallen and injured her knee early in the game. She had not scored yet that day. The winning coach knew this and wanted to give her a chance to score some points for her team. After all, it wasn’t going to affect the final outcome.
He has purposely stepped outside of the designated coach’s box. When warned to return by a ref, he merely smiled. When given the technical, he told the other coach to let the injured girl score.
Because nice matters.
When on your way to win a state basketball championship, most people would not be thinking about the one player on the opposing team’s bench who was injured.
Yet this coach was.
Thank you, coach, for showing us all that a little kindness goes a long way. Your humility after the game also shows a great deal about your character and the team you coach.
We all have so much to learn from you.
