There are many times where I look at my Facebook or Instagram news feed and I see a “perfect” family. Someone shares pictures of their kids happily smiling and playing, or someone shares a picture of another gorgeous sunset. This is totally cool! But then they share only perfect things for weeks and even months on end. No one’s life is perfect all the time.
That makes me wonder. What am I sharing on social media? Am I keeping it real?
Yes, we want others to like us and to be able to relate to us, but shouldn’t we be true to ourselves?
Awhile back I shared this picture on Instagram.
I had gotten up at 4:30 to head to a wrestling tournament to watch my husband coach. While half-asleep I got this brilliant idea to multi-task by brushing my teeth and making little man’s bottles for the day. People – if you are not a morning person – do NOT try to multi-task during the 4am hour! You can see how it ended… Rather than get upset and cry over spilled milk (literally!), I just sighed, laughed, and took a picture. This is real life!
When March Madness started this year, Andrew was a bit more excited than usual. When I asked him why, he informed me that he found another perk of being a dad – he got to fill out a third NCAA bracket. WHAT?!?
What’s a mom to do? Well, head to Facebook of course! I wanted to see if others thought he should be filling out a bracket in a one-year-old’s name. I figured I’d get a ton of backing and everyone would say that he was out of line. Wrong! As you can see from the screenshot above, many people took his side. Sigh.
One more example…
When my son was just mastering rolling over, I looked down one day to see this –
Seriously, kid?! I had just looked at him not two minutes prior to this. Yet somehow he had managed to silently spit up, face plant in said spit up, and then roll over. Being the great mom that I am, I ran for the camera before helping him out. 😉 Poor kid!
Now the real question is this – how do I keep it real on social media? These are my three, easy tips:
- Post the good.
- Post the bad.
- Post the ugly.
That’s it! Really! Share those every day moments! Let people know you’re having a rough day. Share the good! Did it take literally 82 tries to get that perfect picture? Share a collage of a few of the others. It will get people laughing and help them relate to your more! We all have those moments! People will think more highly of you for being real.
How do you share on social media? Do you think it should be all butterflies and cupcakes, or do you keep it real? I’d love to hear more in the comments below!
