Blessed. It’s a word many of us use when something good happens to us. We find out we’re expecting a new addition to the family, we find out our husband received a new job, or we get good news about our aging grandparents from the doctor. In each situation, we feel blessed.
But what about the times when life is not all rainbows and butterflies? What about the rough patches? Does that mean we are no longer blessed?
It’s often hard to see the blessing in these rough times. We don’t want to experience pain or suffering, but having those feelings – if only on occasion – make the good times that much more special.
Today I want to share some of my “backwards” blessings. In doing so, I hope to help you see your own blessings, even if they are in disguise.
My “Backwards” Blessings – or Blessings in Disguise
I am blessed to mourn the loss of my grandfather. Some never get to meet theirs.
I am blessed to hear my husband speak highly of his father. While I never met my father-in-law due to his early passing, I feel fortunate knowing he helped raise the amazing man God chose for me to marry.
I was blessed to need biopsies at a young age. It caused me to pay better attention to my health and listen to my body better.
I am blessed to have gotten blood clots immediately following my son’s birth. It has made me appreciate the time I have with him, his daddy, and all the others that I love here on earth.
I am blessed to mourn the loss of a friend. It shows I have had dear friendships that mean a lot to me. Not everyone can say the same.
I feel blessed that someone went off about me on Facebook. My not retaliating set a good example for my son, family, and friends. I could have stooped to her level, but her rant made me more appreciative of the true friends I have. This situation also made me more aware of my social media presence and how I treat others on a daily basis.
I am blessed that my son fell down the stairs. Obviously the fact that he is ok is the biggest blessing, but that one incident made me more aware of what we are doing each day. That, in and of itself, is a whole ‘nother blessing.
We can be blessed in any and all situations. Many times it’s our own viewpoint that decides how we react and whether or not we feel blessed. God is able to see right away the blessing in every situation, but – due to our human nature – we often cannot do that.
So today I challenge you. Try to see the blessings in every situation! And even if you cannot see the blessing today, trust in God. Know that he is using this moment to help you in some way – whether or not you can see that. You are blessed, even if it doesn’t always appear that way.
