“A brick?”
Those were the two words that came out of my mouth as my uncle handed Andrew and I our wedding present.
“Um… Thanks?” I think I muttered.
He laughed, and then he started to explain.
“I’ve been down this marriage road twice. The first time, well, I didn’t do so well. This second time I feel like I have a better idea of what I’m doing. We aren’t perfect, but it’s going a lot better.”Ok, that makes sense. But still, a brick?
(I suppose I should add at this point that it was a soft, foam brick. Doesn’t that make it even stranger?!)
“This brick will help your marriage,” he stated.
I’m sure the look at my face nicely said, “Yea, right!”
He continued, “Seriously! Whenever you are frustrated with one another, just throw this brick at the other person. You can’t hurt each other and you’ll look so ridiculous that you’ll be forced to laugh. Then talk it out. There’s nothing so wrong with your relationship that you can’t talk it out. That’s the lesson I learned after my first marriage failed.”
Wow. Tears. Hugs.
“Thank you!” Andrew and I hugged him as he walked away.
That “dumb” little brick still sits in our living room. Occasionally, we throw it at one another. Typically it’s when one of us is spending too much time on the computer and ignoring the other person, but sometimes it’s just in fun. It’s a great ice breaker that helps us come back together and connect again.
So yes, that dumb little brick might have been one of the simplest, yet most meaningful, wedding gifts we received on that special day. It’s worked quite well for us so far, and I’m sure it’s got plenty more uses in its life as well!
