You hear about it all the time. People cut cable. How in the world do they do it? Well, I’m here to tell you! This is our explanation of how to cut cable without much pain.
First of all, I strongly recommend just ripping the band-aid off. If you’re an avid TV watcher, there’s no “easy button” to help you slowly get used to not having cable. If the thought of cutting cable makes you cringe, just think about all the money you’ll be saving! With the average cable bill now reaching $100 a month, you’ll be saving $1,200 a year! That’s a pretty big chunk of change.
There are a variety of ways to feel less pain after you’ve cut the cable.

First, there’s Netflix. We did this for the first few months. Binge-watching TV shows became a too-favorite pasttime.
Then we did a little bit of research and realized that Amazon Prime was actually a much better deal! You see, we were paying $7.99 a month for Netflix. That adds up to $95.88 a year. But Amazon Prime is only $99 per year, and you get a ton of great two-day shipping for free on many items! (We actually should have looked into this sooner! In 2014 we paid over $100 to Amazon for shipping, and not the two-day shipping. Oops!)
Plus – Amazon Prime also gives you free access to lots of music, library book downloads, and photo storage. Click here if you want to give Amazon Prime a free 30 day trial.
We also watch a few different shows directly online. Grey’s Anatomy and The Big Bang Theory are two of our guilty pleasures. Once in awhile we watch something else as well, just to keep up with what’s new.
The hardest part for us has been sports. Andrew really misses his college football games on Saturday, but since he coaches so much of the year and isn’t home – it’s not too much of a hardship.
To help deal with our love of sports, we found a great group of people that have allowed us to join them each Sunday to watch as much NFL football as we’d like. We paid about $200 up front to help offset the costs of all the food, NFL Sunday ticket, and utilities for the building – and we’re welcome to sit and binge watch every NFL game all year long.
Was this a necessity? No, but that’s basically our only social outing all week long, and we have the cash to pay for it – so it works for our family.
If you’re looking at cutting cable, I hope these tips have helped. How to cut cable without much pain? Well, I’m not saying it will be entirely painless – but it will be a worthwhile way to save money for you and your family.
