Holy Trinity and Snickers: How They're Alike

During Holy Trinity Sunday, our priest gave an interesting sermon. He compared the holy trinity and Snickers candy bar. At first, I thought he was crazy, but then it really started to make sense!

Don’t get me wrong – I understand the Holy Trinity or the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – but most priests lose me during their Holy Trinity sermon. They often go into the philosophical side of things, and it’s – quite honestly – over my head. Compare the Holy Trinity to chocolate, and you not only have my undivided attention, but I understand it as well!

So how in the world is the Holy Trinity like a Snickers bar, you ask? Let’s find out!

The nougat is the Father. The nuts are the Son. And the caramel is the Holy Spirit. Snickers is the number one selling candy bar in America because it is made up of the perfect amount of each of these three items – just as the Holy Trinity is made up of the perfect amount of each.

But what about the chocolate all around the outside? That is the all-encompassing love that envelops everything else.

Not only did I walk away from mass with a better understanding of the Holy Trinity, but I don’t think I will ever look at a Snickers bar quite the same. I will smile and think of God each time I see one on the shelf in the grocery store.

This homily also gave me a better way to relate the Holy Trinity to those outside of my faith and children who lack the higher level thinking needed to really explain the entire Holy Trinity philosophy. After all, who can’t relate to a candy bar analogy?! 😉
