I originally saw this idea on Everyday Mom Ideas from Two Girls Being Crafty. I knew I had to give it a try in our wedding colors – red and white. So here you go…
I started with a $3 thrift store vase and spray painted it red with paint I had left over from the candy project. Then I went into the tree grove around my folks’ house and found these sticks. It took just a few minutes to spray paint them white.
I took some leftover scrapbooking paper in various shades of red and patterns of red. I also bought some white floral wire. Finally I used gluesticks. (I REALLY hope these hold up well since they have to make it until May! Update – January 2016: They are still sticking as the tree is the focal point of our dining room.)
As you can see in the first picture, I basically used three sizes of leaves – small, medium, and large. However, I didn’t use any templates, I just started cutting. Make sure to cut out two of each one. (Hopefully you’re not like me. I didn’t read that part until AFTER I’d starting cutting out one of a bunch of the leaves. Oops!)
After you have some leaves cut out, just start gluing them onto the wire and twisting the wire around the leaves. I don’t have any real advice for ways to make it easier other than to dive in and do it! You’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
Here’s the tutorial by Two Girls Being Crafty on Everyday Mom Ideas again in case you want to look at it.
No real idea yet where this is going to go. I know it’ll find a home, but where would you put it?
Update: This ended up going on the table we used for family pictures to show all our parents and grandparents on their wedding day. We now use this as a home decor piece in our dining room. I still get a lot of compliments on it from visitors!
