Growing up my siblings and I used to fight to get our hands on the Sunday newspaper. Why? The comics of course!
Then I realized that even the weekly newspaper had comics, albeit not as prominently displayed or nearly as fun – but comics, nonetheless.
Fast forward to high school. During study hall one day I was perusing the newspaper when a comic caught my eye. Thinking I’d get a small chuckle while bored worked for me!
Except I didn’t get a chuckle.
You see the comic I read showed angels up in heaven with a filing system. The first comic was the “requests” room, and the angels were busy filing everything people wanted. The requests were everything from “win the lottery” to “help mom beat cancer” to some of the more frivolous things we sometimes ask for.
“Alright, I thought. That looks pretty typical.” And then I kept reading.
The next section of the comic had a “thanks” room. There was one angel sitting there bored as could be with nothing to file.
In the third, and final, section of the comic, another angel walked in. “Another slow day?” he asked.
“Yes, I guess people are just too busy to say thank you,” replied the bored angel.
Wow!
I’ll be the first to admit that I was not someone who thanked God on a regular basis. Yes, I asked for all sorts of things, but to actually take the time to thank God for all I have – nope!
Since that day I have totally changed the way I pray. I would now say that over 50% (maybe even 75%) of my prayers are to thank God for all that I have. During a typical day I will thank him for the beautiful sights I see, my precious family, having enough to live well, answering my prayers, not answering some (because He has so much more wisdom than me) and so much more.
I’d love to hear about a life experience that has changed the way you pray. Share it out in the comments below!
